Does trunk muscle strength affect spinal deformity in adult female patients?: Evaluation of cross sectional area of psoas major and lumbar extensor muscles

چکیده
Material and methods Twenty-five female patients with ASD (mean age 64.3 years) who underwent fusion surgery were included for analysis. Diagnosis was lumbar scoliosis in 10 patients, kyphoscoliosis in 11, and kyphosis in 4. Radiographic measurement of spinal alignment and CSA of lumbar trunk muscles including psoas major and lumbar extensor muscles measured by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) were evaluated. The CSAs of trunk muscles were measured at the cranial endplate of L4 vertebra for a comparative estimation of muscle size. A negative value indicated lordosis in evaluation of spinal alignment.

Do Trunk Muscles Affect the Lumbar Interbody Fusion Rate?: Correlation of Trunk Muscle Cross Sectional Area and Fusion Rates after Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion Using Stand-Alone Cage
OBJECTIVE Although trunk muscles in the lumbar spine preserve spinal stability and motility, little is known about the relationship between trunk muscles and spinal fusion rate. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the correlation between trunk muscles cross sectional area (MCSA) and fusion rate after posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) using stand-alone cages. METHODS A total of ...

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of using spinal stabilizing exercise to reduce atrophy of the multifidus and psoas major muscles, reduce the levels of pain and disability, and increase paraspinal muscle strength in patients with degenerative disc disease (DDD). [Subjects and Methods] In 33 patients (Age range: 25-65 years) diagnosed with DDD, spinal stabilization ex...

Background: The back extensor muscles are the main spinal supportive factors which function establishes spinal stability and erect posture of the spine. Spine deviation from the ideal alignment, like abnormal increase in the forward curvature of the thoracic spine may cause changes in the trunk muscle activity which can lead to a change in the spinal proprioception. It seems that the corrected ...
متن کاملInfluence of back extensor strength on the natural history of kyphosis
Introduction Previous cross-sectional study demonstrated that spinal kyphosis was signiflcantly associated with back extensor strength. However, the influence of trunk muscle on the development of kyphosis is still unclear due to the paucity of longitudinal study. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association of back extensor strength and progression of kyphosis with longitudinal fo...

OBJECTIVE Develop a gender specific database of trunk muscle cross-sectional areas across multiple levels of the thoracic and lumbar spine and develop prediction equations for the physiological cross-sectional area as a function of gender and anthropometry. DESIGN This study quantified trunk muscle cross-sectional areas of male and female spine loading muscles. BACKGROUND There is a lack of...
